The excalibur decision support system (DSS) for soil quality assessment

Abstract
In the context of soil quality, a decision support system (DSS) based on a class-modeling approach was developed in the EXCALIBUR project to elaborate soil quality indices based on physicochemical parameters.
The index was calculated using the Soft Independent Modeling by Class Analogy method (SIMCA). To develop the model, a training data set was built using the soil parameters.
The model was applied to two different real data set (5790 samples; data from Piedmont region agrochemical laboratory and EXCALIBUR project trials) and allowed to classify the samples of these data sets in various quality categories.
The SIMCA-DSS output incorporated a colored quick response (QR code) expressing the quality of each soil sample with a colorimetric scale.
The input user interface of the DSS allows consists of several sections: soil position, soil texture, and chemical parameters.
The results showed that in the training data set 96.5 percent of the samples were included in the model, confirming the model high performance.
