Abstract
One of the most significant consequences of climate change is drought and uneven distribution of precipitation, which agriculture is forced to make serious efforts to solve it.
Abiotic stress, such as drought or heat stress, significantly affects the yield parameters and the metabolite composition of plants.
The aim of our work was to investigate the effect of a new, biodegradable water retention agent (Water and Soil’s Water Retainer®) containing natural ingredients during the planting period, with different irrigation efficiency.
Water Retainer® can effectively increase the water-holding capacity of the soil, thereby reducing the intensity of irrigation and the cost of cultivation without deteriorating the quality of tomatoes.
In two consecutive years, we measured the changing of the most important bioactive components of tomatoes (vitamin C, tocopherol derivatives, lycopene, b-carotene and total polyphenols) with and without the use of a soil treatment agent.
Our results proved that the effect of seedling stress can also be detected in the fruit, the amount of lycopene, vitamin C, antioxidant capacity and total polyphenol content increased significantly with the use of Water Retainer®.
