Quality, flavor, and ripening indices of ‘Neta’ fruit: a new early-season pomegranate cultivar

Abstract
The Israeli pomegranate breeding program at the Newe Ya’ar Research Center, Agricultural Research Organization – Volcani Institute, previously released several early-season pomegranate cultivars, including ‘Emek’ which ripens during August, and ‘Acco’ and ‘Shani-Yonay’ which ripen from mid-August till mid-September.
In the current study, we examined the quality, flavor and ripening indices of a newly released early-season pomegranate cultivar named ‘Neta’ (Neta-NY), which ripens from the end of July until mid-August. ‘Neta’ fruits are dark red, sweet, and have soft seeds.
In the current study, we examined the quality and sensory properties of ‘Neta’ fruit harvested from a commercial orchard in the south of Israel during weekly from the beginning of July (July 2, 2024) until the end of August (August 26, 2024). The results indicated that ‘Neta’ fruit became tasty, edible, and suitable for harvest already at the end of July (July 22, 2024) before other commercial cultivars.
The recommended ripening indices for harvesting of ‘Neta’ fruit are fruit weight ≥250 g, fruit diameter ≥80 mm, aril weight ≥0.25 g, and juice total soluble solids (TSS) ≥13.0%. Peel color and juice acidity levels did not remarkably change during the late stages of ripening and thus are not good indices of ripening.
