Some promising fig cultivars in Puglia region for breba production

Abstract
The fig (Ficus carica L.) is one of the oldest species found in the Mediterranean basin and is currently cultivated in many important countries such as Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Spain, and Italy.
In Puglia, southeastern Italy, the presence of numerous cultivars used for the breba production could complement the already appreciated Petrelli (white skin) and Tauro (dark skin) cultivars, currently used for the local and international markets.
These include ‘Fiorone bianco’ with light-skinned fruit, high weight (140.5 g) and average ripening (June 20). The texture is good and resistance to handling is moderate.
The flesh has good acidity and sugar content (19.2 °Brix). Among the coloured-skinned cultivars, ‘Fiorone della regina’ has oblong fruit (black-purple), with a high weight (89.3 g) and good sugar content (17.6 °Brix). Due to its moderate resistance to handling and thin skin with slight cracks, it is recommended for the local market, as is ‘Troiano nero’. This produces large, purple-coloured fruit, heavy in weight (95.5 g), with thin flesh and small achenes. ‘Rosso Triggiano’ has red purple syconia, not very heavy (78.7 g), without cracks, with average ripening (June 15-20) and light, sweet flesh (16.8 °Brix). It has good organoleptic and productive characteristics. ‘Rosso comune’ is a cultivar that could be used for international markets due to its resistance to handling and the absence of cracks in the fruit.
The syconia are large (120.5 g) with fine, juicy, and sweet pulp (20.0 °Brix) and average ripening (June 10-20).
