MORPHOGENETICAL WAYS TOWARDS VIGOR RESTRICTION IN SPONTANEOUS AND MAN-MADE DWARF TREES

The observation of natural as well as man-made dwarf trees shows that dwarfism does not result from mere growth restriction.
In fact, various growth – and branching mechanisms interconnected in patterned arrangements are cooperating.

Among the different processes through which some control upon vigor can be exerted, gravimorphism and basitony are commented.
Gravimorphism, by shoot bending and arching, permits to weaken the spontaneous acrotonic habit and time of treatment allows some modulation of the effects.
Better understanding of basitony could, in the long term, bring the possibility to convert trees into shrubs.
