Abstract
Standard (ST), semidwarf (SD), compact (CT), and dwarf (DW) tree growth types differed in the initial dormant pruning required to develop an open-centered canopy.
CT trees required 2 to 10X more wood removed than other tree types to achieve similar light penetration in late May.
By late July pruning had increased light penetration into dense canopy tree types (CT, DW) and decreased it in open canopied types (ST, SD) as compared to unpruned controls.
Thus, as the growing season progressed, pruning tended to mask the differences in canopy density associated with tree type.
