Abstract
Pruning results in an immediate reduction of tree size as the consequence of tissue removal.
Growth of trees following pruning is influenced by factors that exert direct as well as indirect effects on tree physiology.
Reduction of leaf, shoot, or root volumes and the carbohydrate and/or nutrient reserves that they contain directly limit potential growth.
Changes in rates of production/balance of endogenous growth regulators, mobilization and redistribution of carbohydrate or nutrient reserves, increased photosynthetic efficiency, and other such results of pruning indirectly alter growth potential.
Ultimate effects of pruning on tree growth and size must be considered in relation to physiological tree age, growth and fruiting habits, stage of tissue development, and the environment to which the tree is exposed.
