Abstract
Field comparisons of the growth and vigor of spur and non-spur-type apple trees showed that the commercially-available spur-type trees differ widely in growth and shoot development.
Not all spur-type trees exhibit the characteristic degree of compactness seen in spur-type Delicious trees.
Differences in internode length, escape of lateral buds from apical dominance, and canopy density were noted among spur-type trees of different cultivars.
