Abstract
Protea repens is structurally a complex plant and can therefore provide a diversity of niches for insects to exploit.
The plant can be divided into three main niches: (a) flower heads housing flower visitors and pollen and nectar feeders, (b) leaves housing leaf feeders and/or visitors and (c) seed heads and stems housing the borers.
Insects create major phytosanitary problems for marketing P. repens cut flowers.
Leaf damage is caused by 32 species of leaf feeders.
This group includes the leaf miners, which are responsible for most of the leaf damage.
The ten borer species found in seed heads have a significant effect on the reproduction of the plant.
