Abstract
Only two mite species associated with Proteaceae can be regarded as of economic importance in South Africa, namely Proctolaelaps vandenbergi, the itch mite and Aceria proteae, the witches broom mite.
The itch mite does not affect the plant adversely since it feeds on pollen and nectar, but it causes significant phytosanitary problems in cut flowers as well as skin irritation to humans. Aceria proteae is found on numerous proteas and is probably the vector which conveys the agent causing witches’ broom.
