Abstract
Tree vigour, productivity and fruit quality of ‘Washington Navel’ orange and tangerine were evaluated on eight rootstocks for six years after planting.
Local rough lemon, C. volkamariana and ‘Rangpur’ lime produced the most vigorous trees.
The citranges ‘Carrizo’ and ‘Troyer’ were the least vigorous.
Flowering and fruit setting closely followed tree vigour: ‘Cleopatra’ mandarin coming into bearing late.
The highest fruit production of Navel orange was on ‘Cleopatra’ mandarin and rough lemon rootstocks; tangerine on C. volkamariana. Navel orange on C. volkamariana rootstock and tangerine on citrumello produced the largest fruit.
Navel orange juice content was highest on rough lemon and lowest on C. volkamariana; sweeter on ‘Citrumello’ and ‘Koethen’ sweet orange. C. volkamariana could possibly substitute for rough lemon at higher altitudes.
