Abstract
Thermal unit summations were calculated using different procedures on data obtained experimentally in 27 different environmental conditions, in order to analyse the possibility of reliably predicting the date of ripening of the first fruit in tomato for fresh consumption.
The thermal unit summations showed better reliability for purposes of prediction than calendar days.
As far as the different calculation procedures were concerned the most stable values were obtained with the sine-function but simpler procedures, like those based on sums of daily average temperature above a threshold gave equally reliable results.
