Abstract
The Spanish production areas have excellent natural conditions (climate and ground), but some socio-economic aspects cause of reduction of the production areas.
From what the professionals say in the several production areas about the 1989–90 season, we can estimate the current carnation growing area to be 1,049 ha.

The carnation crop, having overcome the problems of the 1988–89 and 1989–90 seasons, has an encouraging future if the growing will be based in the family agricultural structure and a professional attitude.
By reducing the area for carnation production and improving production, quality and commercialization, it will be possible to achieve the competitiveness and profitability required in the European Market of 1993.
