Abstract
In Central and Northern Europe light level is the factor restricting growth for about 3–4 months.
Due to the high costs, artificial light has been used for a long time only in stock or young plant production.
With the development of efficient high pressure sodium lamps, a local decrease of energy costs and a higher demand for quality and time orientated production, a rapid increase of light application could be obtained also in pot plant an cut flower production.

This paper gives an overview about effects of supplementary lighting on growth and quality of ornamentals.
Emphasis is laid on effects of lighting on plant habit, crop duration, keeping quality and the resistance against fungus infection.
Furthermore it reports the advantages and disadvantages of different lighting strategies.
Aspects of light quality and the improvement of crop management obtained by the use of supplementary lighting is also discussed.
