Abstract
Fruits of four apple cultivars: ‘Cortland’, ‘Gloster’, ‘Lobo’ and ‘Spartan’ sampled in orchards of Central Poland were studied.
The mineral element content of fruitlets, leaves and fruits after harvest was determined.
The incidence of bitter pit-like symptoms provoked by infiltration with magnesium chloride was positively correlated with the ratio of K/Ca in ‘Cortland’ and ‘Gloster’ fruits; the coefficient of determination was 41% and 44%, respectively.
Fruits developed from late blooming flowers were considerably smaller than those from earlier bloom.
They produced less ethylene, exhibited a lower starch index; this indicates that fruits developed from flowers of a protracted bloom period should be harvested at least twice.
Besides, in most of the cultivars under study a significant correlation between the starch index and internal ethylene concentration was found; hence the starch index may be a good criterion for determination of optimum harvest time.
