CONSTRAINTS OF ONION PRODUCTION AND IMPROVEMENT MEASURES ADOPTED BY FARMERS IN NEPAL

Abstract
Onion is one of the major vegetable crops of Nepalese farmers, but little research and development work has been done to address the major constraints limiting its production and productivity.
Studies at the Lumle Regional Agricultural Research Centre, Pokhara, Nepal, have shown that the major constraints of bulb production are premature bolting, bulb splitting, poor adaptation of varieties to low input management, low soil fertility, adverse environmental conditions, and poor storage potential of the bulb.
Farmers’ practices, which have evolved from decades of trial and error under their growing conditions and have shown encouraging results in overcoming production and storage problems, are documented.
Preliminary results of trials conducted at Lumle to overcome bolting and postharvest bulb storage losses, and to identify suitable varieties are presented.
The problems associated with onion bulb production need to be addressed by coordinated and participatory research.
It is suggested that this be achieved by developing strong linkages among the institutions of the region.
Similarly, farmers possess considerable knowledge and skills that need to be evaluated and utilized.
