Abstract
The customs of the ethnic communities (Totonacas and Nahuas) of the Sierra Norte of Puebla (Mexico) have their origin in the prehispanic period.
Ancestors of these groups used plant’s richness and aesthetic value to express their feelings and in the observance of religious and rural ceremonies.
Contemporary communities still do so.
Indigenous settlements are perfectly incorporated into the rural landscape.
A large quantity of unexplored ornamental potential – species and knowledge of nature’s beauty – is located in these communities.
Species and this knowledge could be useful for ornamental horticulture (new commodities). This study documents the use of ornamental plants in the most important celebrations.
