Abstract
Based on research of a vast amount of national and international publications on school gardens and kleingaerten, the paper presents a general overview of the development of school gardens and kleingaerten and their meaning for education and enhancement of life quality within the last century or so.
Four phases of development are discussed.
Starting with the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the development of school gardens and kleingaerten is specifically given attention for the 1920s, the 1930s and 1940s, and concludes with the second half of the 20th century.
