Abstract
Models for several apple and pear pests in the UK have been constructed for use in conjunction with meteorological monitoring equipment to provide a rational basis for decision making in orchard pest management.
The models have been validated thoroughly against historical results over many years of pest populations in orchards in England.
The models have been developed into a computerised forecasting system.
This package, named PEST-MAN, has an intuitive style of presentation involving simple pull-down menus, context-sensitive help facilities, and colour graphics which ensures that users familiarise themselves quickly and efficiently with the system.
PEST-MAN underwent an extensive trial in 1994. The system was used successfully by top fruit growers on over 80 farms throughout England to rationalise their pest management decision making.
A commercial version of PEST-MAN is now available.
