VARIETY-TESTS OF HIGHBUSH BLUEBERRIES IN CHIBA-KEN, JAPAN

Abstract
In general, Japanese consumers prefer a large berries that are sweet, and have excellent eating quality.
This variety test was conducted to obtain data needed for selecting cultivars preferred by most consumers.
Twenty-three highbush blueberry cultivars were: early ripening (‘Bluetta’, ‘Collins’, Earliblue’, ‘June’, ‘Northland’, ‘Northsky’, ‘Patriot’, ‘Spartan’, ‘Weymouth’); medium ripening (‘Berkeley’, ‘Bluecrop’, ‘Bluehaven’, ‘Bluejay’, ‘Blueray’, ‘Coville’, ‘Darrow’) and late ripening (‘Burlington’, ‘Dixi’, ‘Elliott’, ‘Herbert’, ‘Jersey’, ‘Lateblue’, ‘Pemberton’) were used in this test.
Plants at Chibaken Agricultural College’s farm wer four year old in 1991. Three to five plants per cultivar were used in the study.
Cultivars preferred by sonsumers that combined large fruit size, and high sugar with excellent eating quality were as follows: early ripening; ‘Collins’, ‘Earliblue’, ‘Spartan’. mid-season; ‘Berkeley’, ‘Bluecrop’, ‘Coville’, ‘Darrow’. late ripening; ‘Burlington’, ‘Dixi’, ‘Lateblue’.
