Abstract
The objectives of this paper are to quantify and to characterize the Japan demand imports of spices during the period 19901995. Japan is the second importing country of spices in the world in terms of value, with the 7,8% of the world demand.
Imports almost 100.000 tonnes per year reaching a value of 140 millions US$. The annual imports increasing rate was 5,3% during the period 91/95 in terms of volume and, 10,2% in terms of value.
In the analysis of the evolution of Japan imports during the period 91/95 considering volume stand out five products as to know: Ginger (61,8%); Genus Capsicum (9,5%); Pepper (7,6%); Turmeric(3,6%) and Coriander (3,0%). All the products considered showed positive average annual increasing rates.
In terms of imports value stand out the following products: Ginger (38,2%); Genus Capsicum (14,5%); Other Spices (11,6%); Pepper (9,7%); Cinnamon (3,3%) and Vanilla (3,4%). All the spices showed positive average annual increasing rates except: Cloves (-12,4%); Turmeric (-5,60%) and Fennel (-0,98%).
