Abstract
Effects of photoperiod and temperature on flowering in seven Dendranthema species (D. boreale, D. indicum, D. japonicum, D. occidentalijaponese var. ashizuriense, D. ornatum, D. pacificum, D. yoshinaganthum) and two chrysanthemums (D. grandiflorum cv.
Spring Song and Shuho-no-chikara) were investigated.
Day lengths of 10, 12 and 14 hours were applied in a growth chamber maintained at 25°C. All species flowered under day lengths of 10 and 12 hours while those under a 14-hour day length produced crown buds.
The number of days to flowering differed depending on the species.
Rooted cuttings of the species with and without 20 days storage at 4°C were grown under a natural inductive photoperiod in a greenhouse maintained of minimum 10, 15 or 20°C. Chrysanthemum (cv.
Spring Song) and D. indicum flowered under 10–20°C, D. japonicum and D. yoshinaganthum required minimum 15°C while other species required 20°C. The chilling treatment of cuttings enhanced or delayed flowering depending on the species.
