EFFECT OF COVERING ON THE EXTENSION OF F. SYLVATICA, P. AVIUM AND A. PSEUDOPLATANUS SEEDLINGS

Abstract
To study the effect of temporary covering on the extension of nursery tree seedlings, pregerminated seeds were sown and covered with 4 different materials: white plastic, acryl, green and yellow net for 90 days.
Length, number and dry weight of internodes of F. sylvatica, P. avium and A. pseudoplatanus were compared to those of uncovered control seedlings.
Covering reduced light intensity up to 40 %, and the colour of the covering had an effect on spectral distribution of light, as green net decreased the ratio between red and far-red light, whereas yellow net decreased transmission of blue light.
The length of the internodes was increased under green net in A. pseudoplatanus, whereas no effect was found in F. sylvatica and P. avium. Before using covering special attention should be given to a possible change in spectral distribution and reduction in light intensity under the coverings and the effect on plant species.
