Abstract
The Pineapple Working Group was started in 1992 when the 1st International Pineapple Symposium was held in Honolulu.
The initial membership list consisted of those who attended that symposium.
A newsletter, Pineapple News, was started in the latter part of 1993 with a one-page publication and a subscription form that sought voluntary contributions to support the newsletter.
Currently the membership mailing list includes 288 names of pineapple researchers, pineapple growers, and libraries in 46 countries.
Contributions of over $4000 have made it possible to publish and mail five issues of pineapple News.
Written contributions from Working Group members have produced issues with 17, 25, 23, and 15 pages.
Approximately two years after the newsletter was started, a web page on pineapple was established at
http://agrss.sherman.hawaii.edu/pineapple/pineappl.htm.. Web page content ranges from simple instructions on how to grow a potted pineapple plant to the contents of Pineapple News.
The several hundred ‘hits’ on the web site range from U.S. homeowners growing one or few plants to buyers looking for sources of frozen juice concentrate.
A small commercial planting was established in Lebanon as a result of information provided on the web page.
Characteristics of Working Group membership and the future plans for the Working Group will be discussed.
