Abstract
At least 6 species of ants were found in pineapple field in Chonburi province, i.e. Monomorium sp., Pheidole sp., Solenopsis sp., Tetramorium sp., Paratrechina sp., and Odontoponera sp., Two of them were important pests.
The bigheaded ant, Pheidole sp. and fire ant, Solenopsis sp. attended mealybugs, Dysmicoccus brevipes (Cockerell) (Homoptera : Sternorhyncha) in pineapple field.
The two experiments were carried out in randomised completed block design with four replications.
In the first experiment, there were five treatments; hydramethylnon, fipronil, carbaryl, diazinon and untreated.
In the second experiment, there were three treatments; hydramethylnon, fipronil and untreated.
Fipronil, diazinon and carbaryl were sprayed over pineapple leaves.
But hydramethylnon was applied in the late afternoon to avoid chemical breakdown by photolysis.
The results showed that the number of ants counted in plots treated with fipronil, carbaryl, diazinon and hydramethylnon were significantly reduced.
The population of ants in the treated plots was lower than that in the untreated plot during 1 – 9 weeks after treatment.
The density of ants was reduced in the plot treated with hydramethylnon.
However, the insects were not completely eliminated.
