Abstract
A trial sea shipment of pineapple cv.
N36 from Malaysia to the United Kingdom was conducted in October-November 1996. Pineapple cv.
N36, a blackheart resistant cultivar, was obtained from a plantation in Simpang Renggam, Johor.
The fruits were harvested at mature green stage, i.e. 162–165 days after flower induction.
A total of 572 boxes each comprising six pineapples were prepared for the shipment.
Another group of 60 boxes of pineapple was prepared for observation in Serdang under simulated handling condition.
The pineapples were transported to Singapore by road and left the Port for United Kingdom in a 6 meter reefer container set at 8°C. Evaluations on the fruit quality were conducted at Perishable Transport Co.
Ltd. (PTCL), Colnbrook (T=3–11°C, RH=40–100%) and Classic Hotel, Sussex Garden, London (T=18–22°C, RH=30–40%). Similar observations were conducted simultaneously at MARDI, Serdang in Malaysia on the fruits harvested on the same days which had been stored at 8°C (Holding T=20°C, RH=90–95%). The quality parameters evaluated were the skin colour, crown freshness, fungal growth at the peduncle, appearance, flesh colour, blackheart disorder, leathery pocket disease, chilling injury, taste, texture, TSS, pH and overall acceptability.
The container arrived in the U.K. in excellent condition with no damaged fruits.
Fruit condition was similar to the freshly harvested ones.
The respond from the U.K. importer was very positive and the shipment was considered very successful.
