BORON CONCENTRATION IN THE LEAVES AND NUTS OF ‘SEGORBE’ AND ‘FERTILE DE COUTARD’ HAZELNUTS AFTER FOLIAR TREATMENTS

Abstract
Boron (B) deficiency is an important disorder that can limit plant growth in soils poorly provided with this nutrient.
Deficiency symptoms generally occur in growing tissues.
In order to study the B content of young and adult leaves, and fruits of ‘Fertile de Coutard’ and ‘Segorbe’ hazelnuts, solutions of 300, 600 and 900 mg·L-1 B where sprayed 80 and 100 days after flowering in a non-irrigated trial where the trees were ten years old.
This experiment was carried out over a three-year period in the main Portuguese hazelnut production area.
Leaves from treated and untreated trees were sampled 8 days before and ten days after application.
The levels of B varied between 0.44 and 0.69 mg kg-1. The levels of B in fruits and leaves of untreated trees were always lower than on treated ones.
Boron levels were highest in the nuts that were sprayed on the second date.
Also, the 900 mg L-1 application resulted in higher levels of B in the nuts of both cultivars.
The levels of B in adult leaves of ‘Fertile de Coutard’ were higher than in ‘Segorbe’ and approximately twice that of young leaves.
Nevertheless, ‘Segorbe’ was more productive than ‘Fertile de Coutard’ in this region.
