FRUIT AND LEAF CHARACTERS IN ‘FOŞA’ HAZELNUT ORCHARDS FACING DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS

Abstract
This study was carried out to compare hazelnut orchards facing different directions for fruit and leaf characteristics using ‘Fosa’ trees planted at the same elevation in Arsin (Trabzon), Turkey.
Significant differences were observed only for nut width, incidence of shriveling, and leaf area.
Nut width was greatest in orchards with a southern exposure.
The least amount of shriveling was in orchards with a southern exposure.
The largest leaves (58.83 cm2 ) were in orchards facing east.
Differences for 12 other traits were not statistically significant.
Leaf analysis values for N, P, and K are presented.
The highest soil pH value was 4.88%, in orchards facing east, the lowest total salt (0.047%) was in orchards facing north, the highest P205 (8.66 kg/decare) was in orchards facing east, the highest organic matter 5.17% in orchards facing north, and the highest K20 (164.7 kg/decare) was found in soil in orchards facing east.
Although many differences were not statistically significant, a southern exposure had a generally positive effect on important physical qualities of the hazelnuts.
