Abstract
Disease severity is difficult to measure objectively without operator bias and inaccuracy.
Current image analysis softwares require thresholding of individual images.
This makes them time consuming.
We have developed ASSESS, a portable device which integrates custom-designed software and hand held hardware to measure plant disease severity with accuracy and speed.
ASSESS has efficient hardware, operating procedures and means of data output.
It provides quantitative measure of severity and can recognise lesions of different types, eg based on zones of discolouration.
The software uses image segmentation and classification to discriminate disease symptoms from healthy leaf area.
Data outputs include number and type of lesions, and percentage of leaf area diseased.
It can be configured for use with more than one disease.
In this paper we configure ASSESS to measure the severities of sunflower and sugarcane rusts.
