Abstract
The new plum-breeding programme started at the Fruit Growing Institute in 1997. The major aim was to breed new plum cultivars of high tolerance or resistance to Sharka virus and of high economic quality.

Until now an F1 hybrid fund was established amounting to 3275 plants of 37 parental combinations. 38 elites of Prunus domestica and one of P. salicina have been bred and propagated for future investigations.
The following cultivars were included in the hybridization as the most appropriate donors Stanley, Green Gage, Pacific, President, Serdika, Scoldus and Renklod Hramovih, all of P. domestica species.
The species P. armeniaca, P. dasycarpa, P. cerasifera and P. ussuriensis were used for the interspecific hybridization, all of these species being in combination with P. domestica.

A total of 42 interspecific hybrids were obtained.
The most efficient proved to be the combination of the plum cultivar Stanley and the Modesto apricot, the hybrids of which were 18 in number.
