Abstract
The avocado industry began to develop in the Canary Islands in the 1960’s, covering today about 300 hectares.
West Indian seedlings are recommended as suitable rootstocks for the avocado in the Islands.
The principal cultivars are Fuerte, Robusto, Rincon, Orotava, Hass and Bacon.
Flood irrigation is the basic irrigation system.
Heliothrips haemorroidalis and Hieroxestis subcervinella constitute the more common pests.
Although Verticillium and Oidium are common diseases, Phytophthora cinnamomi has recently become the most serious threat to the future of avocados in these Islands.

In 1969 a cultivar collection was initiated by the CRIDA-11-INIA. Located on the north side of Tenerife, this collection serves the dual purpose of source of vegetal material and evaluation of cultivars; its technical history (vegetal material, spacing, cultural practices, fertilization and irrigation) together with the observations made (height development, fruit characteristics, yields, harvest periods and other observations) are described in this paper.
The conclusions reached are that the most interesting cultivars for this zone are Hass and Bacon; Shephard, Mc Arthur, Ettinger and Chavanier rank second in this evaluation.
