ASPARAGUS PRODUCTION IN DRAINED PADDY WITH DEVELOPMENT OF REDUCED LAYER

Abstract
Recently one third of paddy field has been converted to upland field for the production control of rice.
Production of asparagus in drained paddy has been expected. Two-month-old seedlings of UC157 were planted on ridges of 15 cm in height in upland field (sandy loam) and drained paddy on University Farm, Niigata University in August 1998. There was no special treatment to drained paddy.
Harvest of young spears in both fields lasted for 35 days from April to May in 2000, indicating a greater yield in the drained paddy (5,597 kg/ha) than in upland field (3,899 kg/ha). But the second harvest in 2001 showed a yield increase in upland field (8,536 kg/ha) and a decrease in drained paddy (2,466 kg/ha). Top of asparagus in the drained paddy began to die in August 2000. Roots reached gley horizon, the reduced layer 35-cm deep in converted paddy field.
Crown and root rots were observed and number of new buds decreased in reduced layer.
