HERBICIDE EFFECTS UNDER SPRINKLER LINE ON PRODUCTION AND QUALITY OF ASPARAGUS CROWN

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of herbicides under different water levels on weed control and production of asparagus crowns in a volcanic soil of Chile.
Herbicide treatments across irrigation line were trifluraline (0.5 and 1.0 kg a.i. ha^-1), linuron (0.5 and 1.0 kg a.i. ha^-1), and trifluraline followed by linuron (0.5 and 0.5 kg a.i. ha^-1). The line-source sprinkler system gave different water levels: 6.0, 8.3, 12.5, and 15.0 mm hour^-1 depending how far the plot was from the irrigation line.
All treatments were compared with a weed-free check.
Results showed that herbicides affected weed population until 4 months after spraying.
No herbicide treatments reduced weed population as good as weed-free check did.
Herbicide activity was not related with irrigation levels, and trifluraline (0.5 kg h^-1 a.i.) had the best results on asparagus crown production, while trifluraline (1.0 kg ha^-1 a.i.) was the best in crown quality.
However, none herbicide treatment performed as good as hand weeded-free check.
