Abstract
The occurrence of ultrasonic acoustic emission (UAE) of plants is known to be correlated to plant water relations.
It was demonstrated in recent years by several researchers that cavitation of sap and embolism occurrence in the xylem is associated with sound emission.
To be of significance in irrigation control, there is an impact either on modelling plant growth and water demand or UAE may be a usable feedback signal of plant water status for tuning the control loop.
From repeated measurements of broccoli plants with and without water stress, continuous readings of UAE and weight were made and related to the visual appearance of the plants.
The UAE and transpiration of water stressed plants differed significantly from well-watered plants and this was in accordance with their turgidity.
A positive correlation between UAE and transpiration was found as long as plants did not wilt.
