Abstract
The market is increasingly dictating the requirements on production.
To deliver a well-defined marketable product the desired quality must first be mathematically defined.
A model to describe and quantify quality as a complex feature used within the food industry was considered and revised to obtain a mathematical description of visual quality in ornamental horticulture.
The model obtained was tested with a pot plant, Ficus benjamina ‘Exotica’. The most important quality attributes were defined and used to compile a questionnaire.
A set of plants was evaluated by a panel based on this questionnaire and their images were also quantified using image processing.
Mapping of the evaluations from subjective measurement, i.e. panel assessment, on the data from the objective measurements, i.e. image processing, resulted in a mathematical model for quality of Ficus.
The theoretical framework of quality modelling used in the food industry was successfully implemented within the domain of pot plants.
The relevance of the approach for other crops and the perspective of this methodology for the future is discussed.
