INFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT GREENHOUSE VOLUME/AREA RATIOS ON ZUCCHINI AND EGGPLANT PRODUCTION

Abstract
The ratio between greenhouse volume (V) and ground covered area (A), together with the shape of the roof and the cover material, are greenhouse parameters that influence the climate inside and, therefore, the biological processes of cultivation.
The aim of this research was to study the vegetative, phenological and productive behavior of vegetable species in order to characterize their response to different V/A ratios.
Four cultivars of zucchini and one cultivar of eggplant were tested under greenhouse-tunnels with 4 different V/A ratio (1.5 – 2.0 – 2.5 – 3.0). Volume/Area ratios influenced greenhouses microclimate.
Zucchini gave the earliest yield in the greenhouse-tunnels with V/A 3.0 and 2.0. Among the cultivars the most productive was Elite, if cultivated in the greenhouse-tunnel with V/A = 3.0. Eggplants grown in the greenhouse-tunnel with V/A = 2.5 showed a more rapid growth and more developed plants.
Plants cultivated in the greenhouse-tunnel with V/S = 2.5 gave the earliest production.
Total yields were not significantly affected by the different V/A ratios.
