Abstract
One hundred selected soil samples from the province of Québec were tested for their effect on silver scurf (Helminthosporium solani) development on potato tubers using a whole tuber assay.
The results showed that several soils were able to decrease silver scurf development on tubers incubated at either 10°C, 15°C or 24°C. Many microorganisms isolated from those soils were tested for their individual ability to reduce H. solani development.
Several of them, including Alcaligenes piechaudii, Aquaspirillum autotrophicum, Arcanobacterium haemolyticum, Arthrobacter oxydans, Bacillus mycoides, Kocuria rosea, Streptomyces griseus, Pseudomonas chlororaphis, Pseudomonas putida, as well as a fungus of the class Zygomycetes, reduced the development of silver scurf on potato tubers at 10°C, 15°C or 24°C.
