THE USE OF RADIANT HEAT TO REDUCE THE INOCULUM LEVEL OF SILVER SCURF (HELMINTHOSPORIUM SOLANI) ON POTATO TUBERS (SOLANUM TUBEROSUM) BEFORE STORAGE

Abstract
Growth and proliferation of undisturbed colonies of Helminthosporium solani [silver scurf disease of Irish potato] in vitro is eliminated by radiant heat treatment above 50°C and lasting 5 minutes.
However, detached conidia are resistant to a 3-minute treatment at 70°C, which is sufficiently severe to pose problems when considering treatment of harvested tubers.
Washing in hot water to remove conidia, simultaneously providing a heat treatment lethal to the remaining mycelium, is suggested as an alternative method of reducing fungal inoculum levels on seed potatoes.
