Abstract
Despite its high ornamental value, the genus Hydrangea has been poorly studied genetically.
Since genetic knowledge is essential for the management of genetic resources and plant breeding, two approaches were undertaken.
Firstly, floral biology studies (reproductive regime and outcrossing possibilities) were carried out.
This work showed that the species were self-incompatible and allowed a great number of interspecific crossings.
Self-incompatibility is probably gametophytic.
Secondly, inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers were used to describe the accessions in the sections Asperae and Macrophyllae. This enabled an unambiguous identification of botanical varieties and cultivars.
The genetic relationships among the clones estimated from the polymorphism of ISSR markers were in agreement with those previously inferred by morphological data and the knowledge of the pedigree.
