Abstract
The conservation and use of plant genetic resources are introduced and the need for improved plant conservation as stated in the Convention on Biological Diversity, the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, and the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation. In situ genetic resource conservation in genetic reserves and on-farm are defined and exemplar paradigms are illustrated using case studies for the legume genus Lathyrus. It is hoped that the paper will demonstrate the effectiveness of the general methodologies proposed and provide an exemplar that could be adapted to conserve other plant genetic resources groups.
