NEW BREEDING METHODS IN SWEDE -PURE LINE VARIETIES SELECTED FROM MICROSPORE-DERIVED LINES

Abstract

Swede is an important vegetable in Norway, and production has been based up to now on open pollinated varieties.
The existing swede varieties are therefore non-uniform, but because swedes lack a self-incompatibility system, it is not possible to produce F1-hybrids.
The idea of this work was to produce new varieties of swedes that are self-pollinated based on microspore-derived homozygous lines.
In 1997, 350 homozygous lines were produced from the Norwegian variety ‘Vige’. After self-pollination, field experiments were conducted with 40 homozygous lines in 1998, from which eight lines were selected as interesting for further testing.
Based on results from field trials in several places in Norway, three lines were selected for official approval.
Results from field research in 1999 and 2000 confirmed the fact that the three selected homozygous lines were greatly improved in many characters compared with ‘Vige’. One of the lines was approved as the new variety ‘Vigod’ in 2001.
