Abstract
Effects of low nonfreezing temperature were analysed on a poplar clone (P. tremula L. x P. tremuloides Michaux cv.
Muhs 1). Poplar plants were cultured in vitro, then acclimatized in greenhouse.
After 3 months, during their active growth, they were exposed to chilling stress (4°C) for 14 days.
Growth, photosynthetic activity and levels of sucrose, fructose and glucose were determined.
Freezing tolerance was also evaluated during the treatment on days 0, 4, 7 and 14.
During the cold treatment, plant growth was greatly affected.
Simultaneously, photosynthetic activity showed a significant decrease in the stressed plants.
The contents of sucrose, fructose and glucose increased during cold exposure.
These accumulations could be positively related with an increase in freezing tolerance.
