Abstract
The influence of the inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi on the mineral nutrition of yew has been investigated.
Terminal cuttings from one topiary yew and an unshaped yew were taken and inserted in a rooting bed of sterilised sand under intermittent mist in a glasshouse.
Well-rooted cuttings were transferred to 1L polyethylene bags filled with sterilised peat, under the following treatments: control, inoculation with Phytophthora cinnamomi and inoculation either with Acaulospora scrobiculata or Glomus deserticola, two AM fungi with different infectivity, and two combined treatments of P. cinnamomi inoculated with each AM fungus.
Nine months after cutting transplantation, inoculation of both AM fungi increased P, K, Ca, Mg, Cu and Zn concentrations in the unshaped yew, corresponding with an increased uptake of all these nutrients by the plant.
For the topiary yew, the inoculation of A. scrobiculata enhanced only P and Mg nutrition, but the uptake of the other nutrients was not affected.
