GROWTH, QUALITY AND LEAF PIGMENTATION OF LETTUCE (LACTUCA SATIVA L.) IN PLANT FACTORY SYSTEMS AND A GLASSHOUSE

Leaf lettuce ‘Grand Rapids’ and ‘Danhong’ were grown with three production systems:PF1 (closed plant factory with artificial lighting and 1500-2000 mg L^-1 CO₂), PF2 (plant factory with natural + artificial lighting and 380-450 mg L^-1 CO₂), and a glasshouse (natural light and 380-450 mg L^-1 CO₂). The fresh mass of ‘Grand Rapids’ in PF1 was higher than that in PF2. On the other hand, the fresh mass of ‘Danhong’ was not different in the two plant factory systems.
The growth rate of the two cultivars was higher in the two plant factory systems than in the glasshouse.
The relative chlorophyll, flavonoid and anthocyanin contents of ‘Danhong’ were the highest in PF1. The carbohydrate content was not different in the three systems.
Chlorophyll and anthocyanin contents of ‘Grand Rapids’ were not different in the three systems.
In particular, the flavonoid content was the highest in PF1. Furthermore, the carbohydrate content was the lowest in the glasshouse and not different in the two plant factory systems.
As a result, the two plant factory systems were more suitable for leaf lettuce production in Korea, but there were differences in productivity, quality, and physiological characteristics between Pf1 and PF2.
