EFFECT OF DIFFERENT IRRIGATION REGIMES ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF ‘ELSANTA’ STRAWBERRIES PLANTED ON LOOSE SANDY SOIL

Abstract
Growth and productivity of Elsanta strawberries were evaluated under four irrigation variants: I – control (without irrigation), II – drip irrigation (half the water rate), III – drip irrigation (full water rate), and IV- micro-sprinkler irrigation.
Regardless of the irrigation regimes applied, all irrigated strawberry plants produced greater fruit number and larger fruits than did the control plants. Strawberry plant height was also improved by irrigation and was significantly higher than the height of the non-irrigated plants.
Plant width and leaf number per plant were not different among the treatments.
There was also no significant effect of irrigation on carotin, vitamin A and vitamin C contents.
Between the two irrigation methods tested, drip irrigation was superior in terms of water use efficiency.
The results obtained indicated the important role of irrigation in improving the yield of Elsanta strawberries cultivated on the loose sandy soil.
