Abstract
Enclosing melon fruits in stainless steel globular cages with a diameter of 12 cm significantly prevented their enlargement as expressed in fresh weight.
The total number of cells larger than 200 microns in the restricted fruit was 15 per cent smaller than that of the control fruit.
Sucrose accumulation was suppressed in mechanically restricted melon fruits, in contrast to increased accumulation of glucose and fructose in the fruits.
Therefore, it is concluded that restricting fruit by stainless steel globular cages resulted in larger number of smaller cells in the fruit, which caused the suppression of sucrose accumulation.
