Abstract
The assimilation of photosynthates by leaves and their subsequent distribution to different vegetative and reproductive parts was studied by exposing apple shoot to 14CO2 in polythene enclosure.
Young but fully develop leaves assimilated more amount of 14CO2 immediately after exposure as compared to old and mature leaves.
The growing fruits acted as the dominating photosynthetic sink and most of 14C-activity was recovered from fruits after 42 days of 14CO2 exposure as compared to other shoot parts.
Sorbitol in the leaves contained 80-82 per cent of 14C-assimilated activity.
During further metabolism, sorbitol was found to be metabolized into sucrose in the leaf and stem while, minor fractions of glucose and fructose also contained 14C label.
In fruits, initially sorbitol and sucrose had the maximum label but with the advancement of fruit growth the label was transferred to fructose and glucose.
