Abstract
In the US commercial sapindaceous fruit production is centered in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and California.
Florida has an estimated 486 and 405 ha of lychee and longan, respectively, worth over US$19 million annually.
Hawaii has an estimated 123, 36, and 99 ha of lychee, longan, and rambutan, respectively worth about US$1.1 million annually.
California has an estimated 23 ha of mixed lychee and longan orchards.
Puerto Rico has an estimated 4 and 56 ha of rambutan and kenep (Melicoccus bijugatus) worth an estimated US$0.23 million annually.
The major lychee cultivars in Florida are Mauritius and Brewster with small areas of Hak Ip also planted. Kohala is the major longan cultivar although Do, Biao Khiao, and Phet Sakhon are planted.
In Hawaii, Kaimana, Bosworth, Tai So, and Groff are the major lychee cultivars, Bieo Khiao, Chomphu and Egami are the major longan cultivars, and R3, R9, Binjai, and R156 are the major rambutan cultivars.
In California, Mauritius and Brewster are the major lychee and Kohala the major longan cultivar grown.
The major rambutan cultivar in Puerto Rico is R167 and kenep cultivars Sasa, Ponce, and José Pabón. The major production constraints and research and development activities will be discussed.
