LYCHEE GENETIC RESOURCES CONSERVATION AND UTILIZATION IN ASIA – IPGRI’ S EFFORTS

Abstract
The Asian region is very rich in diversity of tropical fruit species.
There are over 400 edible fruit species in the region and many of these are commercially important and have diversified uses.
In collaboration with International Centre for Underutilized Crops (ICUC), three major species (mango, citrus and rambutan) and three minor species (durian, jackfruit and lychee) were identified as priority species.
Based on priorities identified, IPGRI with the help of several partners, has taken up several activities on tropical fruits of regional importance including lychee (Litchi chinensis). Under the IPGRI project “Conservation and Use of Native Tropical Fruit Species Biodiversity in Asia” funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the work on lychee is currently underway in India, China and Vietnam.
The major activities include information synthesis on the extent of genetic diversity and its distribution, collecting, characterization and evaluation, documentation, conservation and utilization.
The paper describes the progress of work on PGR activities on lychee and highlights the major achievements and the future perspectives.
