Abstract
Among the S-genotypes in sweet cherry, the highest frequency of self-incompatibility breakdown was found in S3S4 genotypes (>3% fruit set when self-pollinated). However, the frequency of breakdown (expressed as either fruit set or pollen tube growth rate) did not differ among cultivars within the same S-genotype combination.
Depending on different temperatures from 10 to 25 °C, breakdown (expressed as unrestricted pollen tube growth) ranged from about 0 to 25 % in self- or cross-incompatible pollinations of all S-genotypes combinations.
The S3S4 genotypes almost always had the highest breakdown frequency at all temperatures.
However, no specific S-allele alone was associated with the increased incidence of self-incompatibility breakdown.
